Joel Clifton is a Canadian photographer.
Currently based loosely out of Toronto, Joel spends most of his time in his truck, exploring Canada and photographing what he loves. Whether climbing, paddling, fly-fishing or curled up in a tent reading a book, he'd almost always rather be outside. He strives to achieve intimacy in his photographs of people and is constantly looking for those easily overlooked details in scenes that make up the emotional and physical spaces his subjects inhabit. He looks for gestures, interactions and expressions that convey the romance of life in the outdoors.
After studying fine art and photography at Ryerson University he was awarded scholarships from the WorldPressPhoto Organization and the Boreal Collective. He was also named an Emerging Photographer at the 2018 Palm Springs Photo Festival. Whether in a university biochem lab or paddling a great Northern river, he's at home behind a camera. His work has taken him from Alaska to Istanbul and he has no desire to stop moving.
